A Simulation Study of Usage-Based Pricing Strategies for Packet-Switched Networks

چکیده
With the Internet experiencing massive growth, new ways to recover ever rising costs and regulate network usage are becoming increasingly important. Several researchers have proposed pricing strategies and econometric models for regulating resource usage in a globally shared network environment. These approaches can take the form of simple \price setting", or can be more closely integrated with the admission control, congestion control, and bandwidth allocation functions of the network. This paper presents a simulation study of two proposed usage-based pricing strategies (one static, one dynamic) for computer networks. In the static pricing strategy evaluated, a price per packet is assigned and held constant over time. Results of the static strategy simulations show that network utilization decreases as the price per packet increases. Revenue, on the other hand, rst increases and then falls as the price per packet increases. In the dynamic pricing strategy simulations, the price varies over time as a result of user demand for bandwidth. As the number of users on the network increases, the price per unit of bandwidth increases. While the behavioural properties of the dynamic pricing scheme make it appear promising as a pricing framework for packet-switched networks, further work is clearly required to better address the tradeoos between network utilization, revenue, and network eeciency.

A Dynamic Pricing Framework to support a Scalable, Usage-Based Charging Model for Packet-Switched Networks
We describe a dynamic pricing framework designed to support a radical approach to usage-based charging for packet-switched networks. This approach addresses various scalability issues by shifting responsibility for accounting and billing to customer systems. The ultimate aim is to create an active multi-service network which uses pricing to manage supply and demand of resources. In this context...

متن کاملA Fuzzy Based Approach for Rate Control in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks
Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks (WMSNs) undergo congestion when a link (or a node) becomes overpopulated in terms of incoming packets. In WMSNs this happens especially in upstream nodes where all incoming packets meet and directed to the sink node. Congestion in networks, if not handled properly, might lead to congestion collapse which deteriorates the quality of service (QoS). Therefore, i...
متن کاملA New Intrusion Detection System to deal with Black Hole Attacks in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks
By extending wireless networks and because of their different nature, some attacks appear in these networks which did not exist in wired networks. Security is a serious challenge for actual implementation in wireless networks. Due to lack of the fixed infrastructure and also because of security holes in routing protocols in mobile ad hoc networks, these networks are not protected against attack...
متن کاملImproved Antnet Routing Algorithm for Packet Switching
Antnet is a software agent based routing algorithm that is influenced by the unsophisticated and individual ant’s emergent behaviour. In this paper a modified antnet algorithm for packet switched network has been proposed that offer improvement in the throughput and the average delay by means of detecting and dropping packets routed through the non-optimal routes. By applying boundaries to the ...
